preservation with jealous anxiety; discountenancing whatever may suggest even a suspicion that it can in any
event be abandoned; and indignantly frowning upon the first dawning of every attempt to alienate any
portion of our country from the rest, or to enfeeble the sacred ties which now link together the various parts."

Historical Notes: The American's Creed was a result of a nationwide contest for writing a National Creed, which would be a brief
summary of the American political faith founded upon things fundamental in American history and tradition. The contest was the idea
of Henry Sterling Chapin, Commissioner of Education of New York State. Over three thousand entries Historical Notes: The
Representatives Office Building on April 3, 1918. The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the commissioner of education of
the state of New York accepted the Creed for the United States, and the proceedings relating to the award were printed in the
Congressional Record of April 13, 1918. It was a time when patriotic sentiments were very much in vogue. The United States had been
a participant in World War I only a little over a year at the time the Creed was adopted.

The author of the American's Creed, William Tyler Page, was a descendant of John Page, who had come to America in1650 and had
settled in Williamsburg, Virginia. Another ancestor, Carter Braxton , had signed the Declaration of Independence. Still another ancestor,
John Tyler, was the tenth president of the United States. William Tyler Page had come to Washington at the age of thirteen to serve as
a Capitol Page. Later he became an employee of the Capitol building and served in that capacity for almost sixty-one years. In 1919 he
was elected clerk of the House. Thirteen years later, when the Democrats again became a majority party, they created for Page the
office of minority clerk of the House of Representatives. He held this position for the remainder of his life.
An Oath of Citizenship is an oath taken by immigrants that officially naturalizes immigrants into
citizens. It is often the final step in this process, and is usually done in a ceremonial capacity. An oath
of citizenship is designed to be a statement of loyalty and patriotism to the new country.
An oath of allegiance is an oath whereby a subject or citizen acknowledges his/her duty of allegiance
and swears loyalty to his/her monarch or country. In many modern oaths of allegiance, allegiance is
sworn to the Constitution.
In the United States presidents, judges, and military personnel are under an oath to the Constitution.

IN a chariot of light from the regions of day,

The Goddess of Liberty came;

Ten thousand celestials directed the way,

And hither conducted the dame.

A fair budding branch from the gardens above,

Where millions with millions agree,

She brought in her hand as a pledge of her love,

And the plant she named Liberty Tree.

The celestial exotic struck deep in the ground,

Like a native it flourished and bore;

The fame of its fruit drew the nations around,

To seek out this peaceable shore.

Unmindful of names or distinctions they came,

For freemen like brothers agree;

With one spirit endued, they one friendship pursued,

And their temple was Liberty Tree.

Beneath this fair tree, like the patriarchs of old,

Their bread in contentment they ate

Unvexed with the troubles of silver and gold,

The cares of the grand and the great.

With timber and tar they Old England supplied,

And supported her power on the sea;

Her battles they fought, without getting a groat,

For the honor of Liberty Tree.

But hear, O ye swains, 'tis a tale most profane,

How all the tyrannical powers,

Kings, Commons and Lords, are uniting amain,

To cut down this guardian of ours;

From the east to the west blow the trumpet to arms,

Through the land let the sound of it flee,

Let the far and the near, all unite with a cheer,

In defence of our Liberty Tree.
